I prioritize getting to know my clients and what is concerning them before problem solving. Once a true understanding of the need for treatment has been reached I use Emotion Focused Therapy and Mentalization Based Therapy to acknowledge emotions, lived experiences, and perspectives of clients and their loved ones. I use Dialectical Behavioral Therapy as a toolbox to build insight and improve day to day functioning.
I refer to the first session as the "get to know each other" session where I explain the therapeutic space and welcome questions about the process. I'll gather a general history to see who you are on the whole. We will identify short term and long term goals. I'll provide an overview of what to expect at the next session and answer any questions.
