Great to meet you!

My name is A.J. Esguerra. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and have been working in the mental health field since 2001. I have split my time primarily between working in residential treatment with abused and neglected children, and most recently in a private therapeutic day school for children and adolescents with special needs (which remains my full-time job). However, after COVID, I felt it was part of my purpose and mission to begin providing online therapy part time. My belief is that the world needs connection more than ever, and there are few things more protective or more resilient than a positive relationship with another person

My approach to therapy

My therapeutic approach tends to be more eclectic in nature. In graduate school I received an MS degree in Counseling Psychology from Radford University. I was trained primarily in the use of Interpersonal psychotherapy. However, recently I have incorporated aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, positive psychology, solution-focused therapy, etc., into my practice. I have pursued special trainings in trauma focused care, mood disorders, attachment and play therapy. I believe that clients would describe me as supportive and a good listener. Creating a safe place for clients to be heard and witnessed is my first priority.

What you can expect from me

Within the first session, I try to establish a sense of openness and collaboration within the relationship. My hope is to provide a safe and secure space for healing, without pushing my own personal agendas or solutions if my client isn't also on board with them.
