Great to meet you!

I'm Dr. Amarjot Surdhar, a double board-certified psychiatrist in General and Addiction Psychiatry, trained at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center (Residency) and Zucker Hillside Hospital, Northwell Health (Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship). My background runs deep, but what I offer here on Headway is intentionally focused: medication management for anxiety, and depressive disorders.

My approach here is simple. I'm here to offer medication options to help improve symptoms of depression, anxiety disorders. I don't prescribe controlled medications such as Xanax, Ativan, clonazepam, Adderall, or Ambien through this platform. This is a standard telehealth limitation, though the conditions can still be managed well with other effective, evidence-based options. And if ongoing individual therapy is what you're looking for, or you're working through something like a personality disorder that needs deeper therapeutic support, I'll point you toward a therapist and coordinate care alongside them.

There are also a few situations telehealth simply isn't built for, and I'd rather be upfront about them than have you discover it mid-treatment. If you've recently been discharged from an inpatient psychiatric or medical hospitalization, are experiencing active psychosis, are at risk for suicide or your safety, need medication delivered by injection, or are currently using substances and need induction-level care, this platform isn't the right fit for you right now, and I'd encourage you to stay with your inpatient team, a crisis service, or a higher level of care like PHP or IOP instead. You deserve support that matches what you're going through, and I'll be glad to work with you once things are more stable.

I hope I can contribute towards a place of peace, and recovery through safe practices.

My approach to therapy

I focus on efficient, targeted medication management: we identify what's driving your anxiety, mood, or sleep issues and find an effective medication approach, with brief supportive check-ins to keep treatment on track. I don't provide psychotherapy, but I'm glad to coordinate care with your therapist if you have one.

What you can expect from me

Our first session is exploratory. I'll ask questions to understand the full picture and work toward a diagnosis — sometimes that takes more than one visit, and that's normal. My goal in session one is to make sure you feel heard and to start building a plan, not to rush a label onto what you're experiencing.
