Great to meet you!

Hi,

I think my 30-year journey through the mental health field began in the late 1970s when people kept telling me that these would "be the best years of my life". Dear Lord!

I majored in psychology at Oswego State University, then, after some time working for the Department of Social Services in upstate New York, I completed my Master's and became a Board-Certified School Psychologist.

I left the full-time public school position to work for a Municipal Community Services Department as a Board Certified Prevention Specialist and Youth Counselor, while continuing to practice as a part-time School Psychologist at a school for youth on the spectrum.

In 2020 I began practicing as an LPCA and became fully licensed as an LPC in 2023.

I embrace my sixties-era hippie chick persona and focus on providing a warm, open, accepting, and often humorous therapy space.

If you feel we might be a good fit, please reach out. I would love to chat and see if we might work well together.

My approach to therapy

I am primarily a trauma informed cognitive-behavioral therapist, blending both narrative and existential approaches into my work with clients. I believe that change is fostered by understanding how the events we experience trigger responses in our bodies, emotions, and thoughts. These responses shape our behaviors and actions. Working together, we can change the patterns of responses and outcomes. I have found that narrative therapy complements CBT well. Changing core beliefs and reframing thoughts helps us rewrite the sometimes unhelpful narratives we have internalized. Existential therapy helps us define our meaning in the context of life's experiences, both tragic and joyful. We live in interesting times, which makes finding our path to meaning even more challenging.

What you can expect from me

My clients take away an understanding and ability to take control of emotions that previously controlled them. They develop the skills and insight to address irrational thoughts and beliefs, and identify the strengths they already have that can help them plan and overcome challenges.

"Therapy" happens in our sessions, but change comes from clients putting into practice the things we discuss and identify as areas to work on when they leave our sessions.

Some might picture CBT-based therapy as unemotional, superficial, and "homework" based, but I am a person-centered older hippy chick, and this is the vibe I bring to our work together.
