Great to meet you!

Hello, my legal name is Mildres, though I go by my middle name, Arlette. Im a Licensed Professional Counselor in Alabama. If you're feeling stretched thin — anxiety that keeps you up at night, low moods that make ordinary days feel heavy, or the weight of grief, a hard life transition, or tension in your closest relationships — you don't have to sort through it alone. I work with adults, older adults, children, and families navigating anxiety, depression, stress, anger, grief and loss, PTSD, and the everyday challenges of communication and behavior at home, school, or work.

Before becoming a counselor, I spent years in education and social services — as a Resource and Middle School Language Arts teacher and supervising Head Start classrooms — supporting individuals with disabilities, students, and families. That work taught me how behavior, communication, and environment shape the way we feel and function, and how much can shift once someone finally feels understood. I bring particular strength in behavioral management and in creative, expressive approaches — including work-based and dramatic-arts techniques — that give clients practical, real-world outlets for self-expression and confidence. My goal is simple: to meet you where you are and help you build skills you can use long after our sessions end.

My approach to therapy

Change in our work together happens through a blend of structure, collaboration, and real respect for your life experience. I draw primarily on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you understand the patterns behind anxious or depressive thoughts and respond to them differently, and I use Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Motivational Interviewing to build momentum toward the goals that matter most to you. For families and couples, I integrate Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Attachment-Based and Cognitive Behavioral Family Therapy, Multidimensional Family approaches, Parent Management Training, and Psychoeducational work to strengthen communication and connection at home.

My style is warm, direct, and practical. I listen closely for the root concerns beneath the surface, then give you concrete tools to use between sessions. I take a holistic view — mind, body, and emotional well-being together — and we set clear, measurable goals so you can actually see your progress. I believe people grow fastest when they feel genuinely heard and are handed skills that fit their real lives, not a one-size-fits-all formula.

What you can expect from me

From our very first session, you can expect to feel heard, understood, and accepted — never judged. We'll spend time getting to know one another, review what matters most to you, and begin shaping clear goals together while making sure we're a good fit. As we work, clients often notice their anxiety becoming more manageable, their mood lifting, and their stress easier to regulate. Many describe communicating more openly with the people they love, setting healthier boundaries, and feeling more confident facing challenges that once felt overwhelming.

Whether you're working through grief, a difficult transition, or strain at home, my hope is that you leave therapy with practical skills — and a steadier belief that change is possible. You've already taken the hardest step by considering counseling; I'd be honored to take the next ones with you.
