Great to meet you!

I’m Athina Smalios, a licensed therapist with nearly twenty years of experience supporting individuals through some of life’s hardest seasons. I work especially well with people navigating grief and bereavement, trauma recovery, low self-esteem, anger, and the emotional impact that can come with overwhelming life circumstances. My style is warm, grounded, and compassionate, and I believe therapy should feel like a place where you can be fully honest without fear of judgment. Over the years, I’ve seen how much healing can happen when someone feels supported, respected, and truly understood, and it is a privilege to walk alongside clients as they reconnect with their strengths and begin creating meaningful change.

My approach to therapy

My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and rooted in evidence-based care. I primarily work with individuals, and I focus on helping clients process difficult emotions, better understand their inner strengths, and build practical coping skills they can use in everyday life. My work often centers on grief, trauma, self-esteem, healthy coping strategies, and anger management, with an emphasis on resilience, emotional regulation, and long-term healing. I believe therapy should be both supportive and empowering: a space where people can explore their experiences honestly, understand the patterns shaping their pain, and develop tools that help them move forward with greater confidence, stability, and self-trust.

What you can expect from me

In a first session with me, clients can expect a calm, welcoming space where we begin by understanding what feels most painful, urgent, or emotionally heavy right now. I want to learn what has brought you here, what you have been carrying on your own, and what kind of support would feel most meaningful at this point in your life. From there, we will start identifying goals together in a way that feels thoughtful, collaborative, and realistic for what you need right now. My hope is that even the first session helps you feel a little less alone and a little more hopeful about what healing can look like.

In our first sessions, we'll explore questions like: What would healing or progress look like for you? What is bothering you the most? What changes would you hope to see in your life? These conversations help guide our work together and ensure therapy is focused on what matters most to you.
