Great to meet you!

If you or your child is struggling with panic, trauma, attention, behavior, burnout, or addiction, I can help. I'm Anne Culver, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with more than 15 years of nursing experience. I provide psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and therapy for adults and adolescents ages 17 and older. For children under 17, I provide medication management under the supervision of their parents and in collaboration with their psychotherapist. Many parents see me for their own care and bring their children to me as well, and each person receives their own individual treatment.

I am accepting new patients now. I am licensed in New York State, hold an active DEA registration, and see patients by telehealth, so you and your child can meet with me from home.

I earned my Master of Science as a PMPHNP from Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, and became board-certified in 2017. My experience is broad, starting at Richmond University Medical Center's Staten Island Mental Health Society, where I cared for children and adolescents in a community clinic. In 2019, I began treating adults and adolescents in private practice in New York City and by telehealth, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for addiction.

I work well with clients facing:

  • Panic disorder
  • PTSD, including childhood and complex PTSD
  • ADHD
  • Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)
  • Brain fog and burnout
  • Impulse control disorders
  • Alcoholism and other addictions
  • Anxiety, depression, and mood changes

I also treat mental health and behavioral disorders in children and adolescents, including problems with mood, anxiety, attention, behavior, and sleep.

My approach to therapy

My care is trauma-informed. Many of the people I see live with PTSD or complex PTSD, often rooted in childhood. I move at a pace that feels safe, and no one should feel judged or rushed. With adults and adolescents 17 and older, I use motivational interviewing and supportive therapy to help clients find their own reasons for change.

When medication may help, I explain why, what to expect, and the possible side effects in plain language. Medication is a tool and is not considered as the whole plan. Most people do best with a system of support.

In my opinion, good care is a team effort. Throughout my career, I have worked side by side with therapists, pharmacists, primary care providers, social workers, and addiction counselors. With your permission, I coordinate with your other treatment providers so everyone is working toward the same goals.

Finally, I keep care practical. Telehealth visits and evening and weekend hours mean you do not have to miss work, and your child does not have to miss school. If you ever need more support than outpatient visits can offer, I will help you find it.

What you can expect from me

Typically, your first appointment is a full psychiatric evaluation by secure video that lasts about [60] minutes. Before the visit, I may send intake forms and short questionnaires. For children, I may also ask for input from other significant adults or the child’s teacher(s).

During an evaluation, topics explored may include:

  • What brought you in and when the concerns started
  • Mood, sleep, appetite, energy, and focus
  • Work, school, and relationships
  • Past trauma, at whatever pace feels comfortable
  • Alcohol and substance use
  • Medical history, family history, and past treatment
  • Safety

Feeling nervous is normal. During the evaluation, I will explain what I am doing and why, in plain language. At the end of the visit, I will share what I see, answer your questions, and talk through options together. The plan may include therapy, changes in routine, support at work or school, or medication. If medication is part of the plan, we will discuss it fully before anything is prescribed. For children, I provide medication management while their psychotherapist provides therapy, and I stay in contact with both the parents and the therapist. You will leave with clear next steps.
