Great to meet you!

Dr. Brad Bull has been a licensed marriage and family therapist since 2003. He holds a PhD (2005) in child and family studies with a cognate in counseling from the University of Tennessee, an MDiv (1992) with pastoral counseling major from Southern Seminary, and BA (1988) in psychology with a minor in creative writing from Carson-Newman University. After spending 12 years as a pastor, he then spent 16 years as a university professor at both private and public institutions. He has been in private practice since 2022. In his spare time, he enjoys storytelling events, canoeing, hiking, movies, and plays Scrabble as a full-contact sport.

My approach to therapy

Yes, family therapists work with individuals. In fact, most of the work I have done has been with individuals. It helps to hear “family therapy” as “systemic therapy.” Systemic therapists focus on how “big picture” factors (family, work, society) influence us and, thus, how we have to cope with them. I love helping individuals, couples, and families grow and prosper. My usual approach includes a combination family systems and cognitive behavioral. To enhance my work with trauma, I am training in EMDR.

What you can expect from me

A veteran once said, "With every others counselor, I've felt like they were just checking off boxes. With you, I feel like I'm being treated as a person." I like it when people would never guess I have a PhD because I come off as down to earth.
