Great to meet you!

I am Brandi Gillam, a Missouri Licensed Professional Counselor and founder of Brave Horizon Institute. I hold a Master's degree in Counseling and have worked as a counselor since 2016. Since 2019, my work has increasingly focused on trauma, including 2.5 years of direct experience supporting survivors of domestic violence.

I specialize in working with adults who have experienced trauma, domestic violence, narcissistic abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, unhealthy relationships, and difficult family dynamics. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling anxious, overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, stuck in survival mode, or unsure of themselves after relationships that caused them to question their worth, judgment, or identity.

I am trained in EMDR and integrate EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), mindfulness, grounding, psychoeducation, and other trauma-informed approaches. Treatment is individualized because healing looks different for everyone. Together, we'll explore how your experiences have affected you, develop tools for managing difficult emotions and triggers, process unresolved trauma, strengthen boundaries, rebuild self-trust, and reconnect with the person you want to be.

My therapeutic style is holistic, warm, compassionate, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. I believe you deserve a space where your experiences can be understood without having to minimize, defend, or explain them. My role isn't to tell you who you should become, but to support you in discovering your own strengths, voice, values, and direction.

At Brave Horizon Institute, I believe your past deserves understanding, but it doesn't have to direct your future. Therapy can help you move beyond simply surviving and toward greater safety, confidence, peace, connection, and hope.

My approach to therapy

My approach to therapy is trauma-informed, collaborative, and personalized to your unique experiences, needs, and goals. I believe healing begins by creating a safe, supportive space where you feel heard, respected, and understood without judgment.

I integrate EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), mindfulness, grounding, psychoeducation, and other trauma-informed strategies. Together, we may explore how past experiences have shaped your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and beliefs about yourself while developing practical skills to manage triggers and feel more grounded in the present.

For clients healing from domestic violence, narcissistic abuse, emotional abuse, or relational trauma, our work may also focus on understanding unhealthy relationship patterns, processing traumatic experiences, strengthening boundaries, rebuilding self-trust, and reconnecting with your identity.

I don't believe therapy should follow a one-size-fits-all formula. We'll work together at a pace that feels appropriate for you, adjusting our approach as your needs change. My goal is not simply to help you cope with what happened, but to help you heal, rediscover your strengths, and create a life that is no longer directed by your past.

What you can expect from me

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin creating a safe, comfortable foundation for therapy. We'll talk about what brought you to counseling, what you're currently experiencing, important parts of your history, and what you hope will be different as a result of therapy.

You won't be expected to share every detail of your trauma or painful experiences during the first session. We'll move at a pace that respects your comfort and sense of safety. I'll ask questions to better understand your needs, strengths, relationships, current challenges, and the ways your experiences may be affecting your life today.

We'll also discuss your goals for therapy and begin developing a personalized treatment plan. I'll explain how approaches such as EMDR, CBT, EFT, mindfulness, and other trauma-informed strategies may support your goals, and you'll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

Most importantly, the first session is also your opportunity to decide whether I feel like the right therapist for you. My goal is for you to leave feeling heard, respected, and hopeful about the work we can do together.
