Starting with a new mental health provider can feel like a big step, and it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous at first. My goal in our first session is to create a comfortable, welcoming space where we can begin getting to know each other and talking about what brings you to care.
During our initial visit, we’ll spend time reviewing your history so I can understand the full picture of your mental health and overall well-being. This typically includes your medical history, past psychiatric experiences, current symptoms, medications, and any previous treatments that have or haven’t worked for you. We’ll also talk about important parts of your life such as your relationships, work or school, daily stressors, and support system.
I’m also interested in learning about you as a person—not just your symptoms. We may talk about your interests, hobbies, values, and the things that bring meaning to your life. These pieces are important in helping us build a treatment plan that truly fits you.
If medication may be helpful, we can discuss options together, including potential benefits and side effects. I also provide supportive therapy, and we can begin identifying goals and strategies that support your mental health.
My approach is collaborative, so you can always ask questions, share concerns, and be involved in decisions about your care. By the end of our first session, we’ll have a clearer understanding of your needs and start outlining a plan for moving forward together.
