Great to meet you!

My name is Nicole Washington, and while my full name is Catherine Nicole Washington, I’ve always gone by my middle name. (A fun fact: I didn’t even realize Catherine was my first name until kindergarten—I thought my mom was Catherine and my name was “Cole” because that’s what everyone called me!)

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) with over 10 years of experience in the mental health field. I earned my Master’s degree in Counseling from Capella University, driven by a lifelong desire to help others—one that was deeply shaped by my own personal journey with mental health challenges. I believe healing is possible, not just because I’ve studied it, but because I’ve lived it.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including partial hospitalization programs, and I have experience supporting children, adolescents, and adults. My background also includes work with domestic violence survivors, DCFS-involved families, group therapy, and individuals navigating complex life transitions. Oh and I’m also a the spouse of a Veteran. Which gives me a unique perspective of the challenges that military family’s may encounter. These diverse experiences allow me to meet clients where they are—with compassion, understanding, and respect.

My approach to therapy

My therapy style is gentle, structured, and client-centered. I utilize evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Therapy, while creating a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard and understood. I also believe that appropriate humor can be healing—helping clients feel more at ease and reminding them that they are human. While I’m not a comedian in session, I meet clients where they are.

What you can expect from me

Imagine going on a first date or attending your first job interview. For many people, there can be feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and the fear of the unknown. Starting therapy can feel very similar—and that’s completely normal.

With me, you may still feel some anxiety simply because this is new. The difference is that I intentionally create a safe, supportive space where you can show up exactly as you are—without judgment.

Our first session is a time for us to get to know one another. We will talk about what brought you to therapy, explore your concerns, and begin identifying what you hope to gain from this process. Therapy is a collaborative journey, and together we will work toward goals that feel meaningful and realistic for you.

There is no pressure to have everything figured out. You set the pace, and I’ll be there to support you every step of the way—because at Beyond the Odds Counseling, your story isn’t over.
