Hi there! I’m Charles Graff, LCSW, and the owner of Ship Happens Counseling in New Jersey. I offer both in-person and telehealth sessions, so therapy can fit comfortably into your life.
I work with people who want to communicate more effectively, whether that’s with their partner, family, or even friends. Many of my clients come to therapy to strengthen what they’re already learning in couples counseling, to build better listening skills, and to find calmer, more positive ways to express themselves. I also help clients manage stress, anxiety, anger, and major life transitions, while developing healthy boundaries that actually stick.
My approach is solution-focused and collaborative. I believe you’re the expert on your own life, and my role is to help you uncover the control you already have. Together, we’ll identify what’s keeping you stuck and work toward the version of your life where you’re not just getting by, but thriving.
As one of my favorite movie lines reminds us, “The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.”
Our first session is going to feel more like a conversation than an interview, because I don’t believe therapy has to feel clinical. I’ll ask questions to understand your background and what’s been happening, but the process is always collaborative. You’ll always be actively involved in figuring out the best ways to make real change happen in your life.
You’ll usually leave each session with a little bit of “homework”, just something to help you keep making progress between sessions. Sometimes that’s practicing a new skill, and sometimes it’s just paying closer attention to a pattern or habit we talked about. Either way, the goal is always the same: to keep you moving forward and feeling more in control of your life.
