Great to meet you!

Christopher D. Nelson, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and U.S. Air Force veteran

providing psychotherapy to adults, families, and neurodivergent individuals. He earned his Master of

Social Work from Rutgers University and has experience across outpatient mental health,

substance-use treatment, assessment, crisis intervention, and case management settings.

Christopher works with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, grief and loss,

caregiver stress, family challenges, life transitions, and concerns related to neurodivergence. His

therapeutic approach is collaborative, strengths-based, and goal-oriented, emphasizing practical

strategies to improve coping, emotional regulation, communication, relationships, and overall

well-being.

Drawing upon his clinical background and ten years of U.S. Air Force service, Christopher also

brings firsthand understanding of military culture and the unique experiences of service members,

veterans, and military families

My approach to therapy

My Approach to Therapy

My approach to therapy begins with creating a caring, safe, and nonjudgmental environment where clients can speak openly and feel comfortable being themselves. I believe an effective therapeutic relationship is built on trust, respect, empathy, and genuine human connection.

I use a collaborative, strengths-based, and goal-oriented approach, recognizing that therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Together, we explore experiences, challenges, strengths, and goals while developing practical strategies that can be applied to everyday life.

My style is compassionate, honest, and direct when appropriate. I help clients gain a better understanding of themselves, strengthen coping skills, improve emotional regulation and communication, and identify patterns that may be getting in the way of meaningful change.

I particularly value working with neurodivergent individuals and recognize that differences in thinking, communication, attention, emotional regulation, and experiencing the world should be understood in the context of the individual rather than viewed simply as deficits.

My goal is to help clients develop greater insight, confidence, and practical tools to navigate challenges and create meaningful, lasting change.

What you can expect from me

Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin understanding what brought you to therapy. You can expect active listening, warmth, and genuine interest in you and your experiences.

We will also review confidentiality and its limits. What you share in therapy is private and will generally not be disclosed without your permission. However, there are certain situations in which I may be legally or ethically required to share information, such as when there is an immediate risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable person, or when disclosure is required by law or court order. I will explain these limits clearly and encourage you to ask any questions you may have about your privacy.

I’ll ask questions to learn more about what is happening in your life, the challenges you may be facing, and what you hope to gain from therapy. There is no expectation that you share everything at once. We will move at a pace that feels comfortable while beginning to identify the areas you would like to work on.

I believe therapy works best when it feels like a conversation rather than an interview. My goal during our first meeting is for you to leave feeling heard and understood, with a clearer sense of how we can work together moving forward.
