Great to meet you!

First and foremost: I love this work. Every client—and every session—feels like a fresh look at the world and at what our lives can mean. It’s a privilege to hear someone’s story and to be invited into the places where life can become more honest, more meaningful, and less burdened by conflict, anxiety, or old obstacles.

My goal is simple: to pay forward the education, therapy, and mentorship that have shaped my own life, and to help others live with greater clarity, purpose, and satisfaction. Therapy isn’t just the treatment of “symptoms”—it’s an ongoing growth of self-knowledge that guides us toward living more truly.

I come to this work with training in philosophy and psychology (including my doctorate), a lifetime of curiosity, and plenty of real-world experience: I’ve been an athlete, a musician, a writer, and a restless soul who learned from his own limits—with the help of two very different, very gifted therapists. Whatever brings you here, you’ll be speaking with someone who has sat in the other chair.

My approach to therapy

My style is relaxed, conversational, and down-to-earth. I’ve found that therapy works best when it feels like two real people thinking together—working toward understanding, toward a life goal, toward healing a relationship, or sometimes toward ending one compassionately.

After more than thirty years, I’m not interested in fitting your life into a theory. I’m interested in helping you become curious about your own experience—how you’ve lived it, and how you want to live it now. Often, even when we’re working with painful material, the conversation itself becomes something you may look forward to: a place where new ways of seeing and living begin to take shape. A place where you can feel the potential in being you, with a day's more perspective, a little lighter, a little smarter.

As the old line goes, the goal is “to work and to love”, and through working and loving, in their many forms, we live in more fulfilling and meannigful ways. But those words mean something different for each of us. Therapy is the one place where you get an education in the field of study known as you. We are both teacher and student, each of us. My job is to help that exploration unfold naturally, honestly, and at a pace at which you can breathe more comfortably.

What you can expect from me

You can expect a friendly welcome and a comfortable, pleasant office. Our first meeting is an intake: I’ll ask what brought you in, what you hope to achieve, and I’ll invite you to tell me your story at your own pace.

My dress and demeanor are casual; I'm just me - Dan. Or Dr. Sapen, if you prefer, but "Dan" fits best. I’m not a surgeon or a banker. We’re here to talk—to try on ideas, make sense of patterns and feelings, and view your life from new angles. This isn’t a courtroom or a laboratory. It’s a conversation in which your comfort, your honesty, and your sense of being fully yourself are what matter most.
