Great to meet you!

My name is David M. Ellis, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with extensive experience providing both therapy and psychological evaluations. I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and adults navigating complex challenges such as trauma, mood disorders, anxiety, substance use, personality disorders, and difficulties within family systems.

I am currently pursuing my PhD in Clinical Psychology at Fielding Graduate University. My doctoral training deepens my clinical practice with advanced research, multicultural perspectives, and evidence-based treatment approaches.

My approach to therapy

In therapy, my approach is collaborative and practical. I draw from evidence-based models such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Trauma-Focused CBT, while also integrating mindfulness, strengths-based, and relational interventions. My focus is on helping clients develop effective coping strategies, build healthier relationships, and create lasting change.

What you can expect from me

The first session is about us getting to know each other and establishing a foundation for our work together. Clients can expect a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment where their story and perspective are taken seriously. I’ll ask questions about what brought you to therapy, your current concerns, and your personal history.

By the end of the session, we usually work toward three key outcomes:

  1. Clarifying Goals: Together we’ll identify the main areas you’d like to focus on, whether that’s reducing anxiety, working through trauma, improving relationships, or building new coping skills.
  2. Creating a Plan: I’ll outline possible treatment approaches that fit your needs, such as CBT for practical skill-building, DBT for emotional regulation, or trauma-focused methods if your history calls for it.
  3. Establishing Safety and Trust: My priority is creating a supportive space where you feel safe to speak openly, knowing that therapy is collaborative and paced according to your comfort.

Clients often leave the first session with a clearer sense of direction, feeling heard, and knowing they have a partner in the process of change.
