Great to meet you!

When your story changes unexpectedly, it can feel impossible to move forward. I’m Dawn Lee Mesnard, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and the founder of The Bluefield Counseling Group, PLLC.

I specialize in supporting adults navigating unexpected parentage, sometimes called NPE or “Not Parent Expected,” DNA discoveries, and changes in their understanding of their biological family. This experience may come in the form of late discovery adoption, sperm or egg donation, or learning that "my dad isn't my biological father." These experiences can bring grief, anxiety, depression, identity confusion, difficulty trusting others, and complicated family relationships. Whether your discovery is recent or something you have carried for years, you deserve a place where your feelings and questions are taken seriously.

My approach to therapy

My approach is warm, collaborative, and trauma-informed. I help adults make sense of the grief, identity confusion, and relationship changes that can follow an unexpected parentage or DNA discovery. Together, we explore what this discovery means to you, build skills to manage overwhelming emotions, and work toward greater stability and self-trust. I incorporate EMDR when appropriate to help process distressing experiences. I respect the complexity of family relationships and support you in making your own decisions about boundaries, connection, and what moving forward looks like for you.

What you can expect from me

You may be carrying a lot of feelings and questions, and you don’t need to organize them perfectly before we talk. During our first session, I’d like to understand what brought you to counseling, how this is affecting your life, and what support you need most. I’ll ask about your current concerns, relevant history, and what you hope to gain from therapy. If you’re navigating an unexpected parentage or DNA discovery, we can begin exploring how it has affected your emotions, identity, and relationships. You can share at a pace that feels comfortable—you don’t need to tell your entire story at once or have everything figured out.

We’ll also discuss confidentiality, what working together may look like, and any questions you have. My goal is for you to feel comfortable, heard, respected, and supported as we begin identifying your needs and developing a plan together.
