Great to meet you!

My name is Deborah Cox and I'm a licensed psychologist and EMDR therapist in Springfield, Missouri. I trained at Texas Woman's University and I'm board certified in couple and family psychology. I love art and I bring that into therapy as much as possible.

My approach to therapy

My entire practice is based on relationship. When I work with clients, I hold in mind both their trauma history and their relationship network. We experience pain as individuals, but we're deeply affected by our systems: families, friends, and social circles.

I have 15 years' experience using EMDR (eye-movement-desensitization and reprocessing) therapy to treat trauma and anxiety and I find that EMDR helps most people feel better fairly quickly (much more quickly than regular talk therapy).

Even when I treat couples or families, I use an attachment-trauma approach, including attachment-based EMDR methods. The basis for my work is the idea that we all do better when our interpersonal connections are built on mutual empathy.

What you can expect from me

In adulthood, every crisis represents a point of major emotional and spiritual growth. So, when therapy flows creatively and we connect as client and therapist, you probably start to feel meaningful connection again, with other people and with yourself. Your nervous system calms down and you think more clearly. You likely restart a hobby or an educational program. You may begin writing a book. There's always some creative aspect my clients rediscover or a new meaning they feel in their everyday lives.
