Great to meet you!

My name is Deirdre Cardosa, and I am a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. My doctoral-level training has deepened my ability to provide evidence-informed, nuanced care to the full range of individuals I serve — from children and adolescents to adults and seniors.

My primary areas of clinical focus include depression, bipolar disorder, ADD/ADHD, anger management and impulse control, and end of life issues. I also support clients navigating trauma, PTSD, panic disorders, sleep difficulties, stress, and physical health concerns that intersect with mental wellbeing.

I am deeply committed to providing affirming, inclusive care for LGBTQIA+ individuals and those exploring or navigating questions of gender identity and transgender experience. I understand that the mental health needs of these communities are both unique and often underserved — and I take seriously the responsibility to be a knowledgeable, trustworthy, and welcoming provider.

I also hold a sincere commitment to supporting individuals and families facing end of life — a profound and often isolating experience that deserves thoughtful, compassionate care.

My approach to therapy

My approach is evidence-based, person-centered, and adapted to the full complexity of each individual's life. At the doctoral level, I bring not only clinical expertise but a commitment to understanding the broader contexts — social, cultural, physical, and relational — that shape mental health.

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients understand and reshape the patterns of thinking and behavior driving depression, anxiety, anger, trauma responses, and mood instability. CBT is structured and skill-building — clients leave with tools that work in real life, not just in session.

I pair this with Behavioral Therapy approaches for clients who benefit from targeted, practical strategies — particularly those managing impulse control, ADHD, or behavioral challenges across developmental stages.

For LGBTQIA+ clients and those navigating gender identity, I bring cultural humility, affirming language, and an understanding of the specific stressors — minority stress, discrimination, family rejection, identity exploration — that can affect mental health. Care here is never one-size-fits-all, and I am committed to following each person's lead.

For clients facing end of life — whether they are navigating a terminal diagnosis, supporting a loved one, or processing anticipatory grief — I offer a steady, non-judgmental presence grounded in both clinical training and human compassion.

What you can expect from me

In our first session, the goal is simply to begin — to get to know each other and start building a foundation of trust.

I'll ask about what's brought you in, what your experience has been like, and what you're hoping might shift through our work together. I'll gather some history — mental health, medical, and personal — but this is always a conversation, not an intake form. You share what you're ready to share, and we go from there.

For LGBTQIA+ and transgender clients, I want you to know from the start: this is an affirming space. You will not need to educate me on your identity or brace yourself for misunderstanding. We can focus on what matters to you.

For clients coming in around end of life concerns, I understand this may be some of the heaviest territory you've ever had to navigate. I hold that with care, and I don't rush it.

By the end of our first session, we'll have a shared understanding of your situation and a beginning sense of direction — including whether medication, therapy, or a combination makes sense. Everything moves at a pace that feels right to you, and every decision is made together.
