Great to meet you!

Hello! There are lots of choices out there when selecting a therapist, and I want to introduce myself. I am an LCSW in Georgia and have had 27 years of experience in higher education as a Professor in an MSW program. I also have clinical experience in hospital and hospice social work. I am currently working as a clinical director and social worker with adults with severe and persistent mental illness, and I am very active with NAMI-Georgia.

As a professional social worker and educator I have embraced practice that involves the whole person-the body, health, mind, emotions and the social environment that includes family, loved ones, organizations, communities and larger systems that affect all of us.

With Headway, I see clients in adolescence and all the years of adulthood. I have the most experience working with those navigating educational, professional, workplace, health, relationship and life challenges and transitions. I also have education, knowledge and practice experience with people who have health and mental health diagnoses, addiction and those who care for them. Principles of diversity, inclusion, equity, social justice, cultural humility and cultural competency continuously guide my interactions, and I welcome all clients!

My approach to therapy

My approach to therapy is collaborative and person-centered. I do draw from a background in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, Interpersonal process therapy, Trauma Informed care, Solution-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Family Therapy, And, I strive to educate clients and give them choices of approaches that fit and work for them. In addition, my practice is guided by the NASW Code of Ethics and interventions and approaches that are supported by scientific and research evidence. My goal is that you build insight, strengthen resilience and personal agency, utilize effective coping skills, and create a life of integrity, health and wellness.

What you can expect from me

In the first session, we will get to know each other. My intention in the first session is for us to co-create a space for collaboration, communication, problem-solving and healing. I will briefly cover informed consent, confidentiality and guidelines for virtual therapy. I will give you the opportunity to ask questions, respond and give feedback throughout the session and the therapy process. In the first session I would like to learn about you, your reasons for starting therapy, and your expectations for the first session and all sessions. Over the years students and clients have described me as supportive, warm, knowledgable, accessible, easy to approach, non-judgmental, and funny (humorous-funny). In our sessions, I want you to feel heard, valued and supported as we work together and you navigate challenges with clarity and resilience, and create a life aligned with your needs, values and goals.
