1. Getting to know you I’ll ask questions about what brings you in, your current concerns, and a bit about your background (family, work, relationships, etc.). You don’t have to share everything at once—just what feels comfortable.
2. Talking about your goals We’ll explore what you’d like to get out of counseling. This could be something specific (like managing anxiety or improving relationships) or more general (like feeling better or understanding yourself more).
3. Explaining how counseling works I’ll go over things like confidentiality, session structure, and what you can expect moving forward. This is also a chance for you to ask any questions.
4. Building comfort and trust The first session is as much about you getting a feel for me as it is about me understanding you. It’s important that you feel safe, heard, and respected.
5. Next steps By the end, we’ll usually discuss a general plan—whether that’s continuing sessions, possible approaches, and what we might focus on next.
