Great to meet you!

Doug Goldschmidt has been practicing psychotherapy since 1997. Before 1997, Doug was first a musician and then a telecommunications economist who worked in South America, Asia, and Ireland to develop innovative communications systems.

He later studied Buddhist psychology, which formed the core of his psychotherapy practice. This was followed by his earning an MSW at NYU in 1997 and extensive training that included certifications in EMDR and Hypnosis.

My approach to therapy

Doug's clinical work is grounded in the Buddhist theory of the mind that emphasizes the importance of precise observation of one’s present experience without relying on conditioned thinking or behavior. Doug has worked to integrate Buddhist theory with other contemporary psychotherapy practices, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Motion Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Clinical Hypnosis.

What you can expect from me

For me, therapy succeeds by first establishing a trusting relationship with the client. The first session is spent listening to what brought the client to treatment, their relevant personal history, and mutually setting initial treatment goals. Sessions should always end with a sense of how we're progressing to meet them. Crises are handled as they arise and related to general clinical issues.
