Great to meet you!

I am a board-certified psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist providing thoughtful, individualized medication management, with psychotherapy available as needed. I work with adults across a range of concerns, including mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, and substance use.

I completed medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and trained in psychiatry at St. Luke’s–Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, where I later served as Associate Training Director and worked as an outpatient psychiatrist treating a wide spectrum of patients, including those with serious mental illness.

My background includes extensive experience working with LGBTQ patients, including leadership roles as President of AGLP: The Association of LGBTQ Psychiatrists, Director of Psychiatry at Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, and Medical Director of Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC). This work continues to inform my approach, though I welcome patients from all backgrounds.

I am a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and have served as Chair of the Council on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities. My approach is collaborative, practical, and focused on helping patients feel better and function more fully in their daily lives.

My approach to therapy

My approach to care is individualized and responsive to each person’s needs. I draw from a range of modalities, including medication management, supportive therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and, when appropriate, couples work. Rather than applying a single framework, I tailor treatment based on what will be most helpful for the concerns you’re facing.

I tend to be warm, open-minded, and collaborative in my work. My goal is to meet you where you are, understand your perspective, and develop a treatment plan that feels both practical and meaningful.

What you can expect from me

In our first session, we will complete a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. I use a structured set of questions with every patient to ensure we cover all relevant areas, including current symptoms, past treatment, medical history, and any factors that may be affecting your mental health.

You will also have ample time to describe what has been going on and what brought you to seek care. My goal is to understand your experience in a thorough and practical way.

By the end of the session, I will share my clinical impressions and discuss treatment recommendations, which may include medication, therapy, or a combination of both. We will review options together, and you will have time to ask questions so we can arrive at a plan that feels clear and appropriate for you.
