Great to meet you!

I’m Dr. Heath Lowman, a Licensed Independent Social Worker–Clinical Practice and founder of Moving Thoughts LLC. My development as a professional listener spans more than 20 years and includes studying philosophy, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps as a suicide prevention noncommissioned officer and Arabic linguist, and practicing clinical social work. I earned my Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California and my Doctor of Social Work from Tulane University.

I provide psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and families from late childhood through older adulthood. My areas of focus include ADHD and neurodivergence, anxiety and mood disorders, trauma, grief, identity and life transitions, relationship and family conflict, LGBTQ+ concerns, suicidality, psychosis, and schizophrenia-spectrum conditions. I welcome people seeking help with a specific diagnosis as well as those who need support, understanding, and direction while navigating the complexity of life.

My approach to therapy

My work is grounded in interpersonal neurobiology, which considers how the brain, relationships, attachment, and lived experience interact to shape emotional health. I integrate attachment-based, cognitive-behavioral, acceptance-based, existential, mindfulness, family-systems, and trauma-focused approaches according to each client’s needs.

My style is collaborative, compassionate, direct, and curious. I listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and help clients recognize patterns connecting their emotions, beliefs, relationships, bodies, and behavior. Our work may involve developing emotional regulation, examining assumptions, strengthening relationships, processing trauma, clarifying values, or creating a greater sense of meaning and agency.

I do not believe people should be reduced to diagnoses or forced into a standardized treatment process. We will develop a plan that respects your experiences, preferences, strengths, culture, and goals. Clients can expect honest conversation, practical guidance, appropriate humor, and a therapeutic relationship in which difficult experiences can be approached safely and without judgment.

What you can expect from me

Our first session is an opportunity for us to begin understanding both what has brought you to therapy and what you hope might become different. I will ask about your current concerns, important relationships and experiences, relevant history, strengths, coping patterns, and goals. We will also discuss confidentiality, how therapy works, and any questions or concerns you have about the process.

The session is intended to feel like a thoughtful conversation rather than an interrogation. You will not be expected to disclose everything immediately, and we will proceed at a pace that respects your comfort and readiness. I may offer initial observations or identify patterns, but we will develop our understanding together rather than assuming that the first explanation is the complete one.

By the end of the session, we will begin forming an individualized plan for our work and determine whether I am a good clinical and relational fit for your needs. You should leave with a clearer sense of how we might move forward together.
