Great to meet you!

I'm Helder Mendes, a dually board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C), and the founder of Emerald Psych LLC. I provide telehealth psychiatry and medication management to adults throughout all of New Jersey.

With having over 19 years of healthcare experience to my practice, I have gained valuable insight into understanding the deep connection between physical and mental health. I treat the whole person, not just the symptoms.

I specialize in anxiety disorders, depression, insomnia, PTSD, mood disorders, and life transitions. I also provide LGBTQ+ affirming care and am committed to culturally sensitive treatment that honors your background and identity. Sessions are available in English, Portuguese, and Spanish — because mental health care is most effective when you can express yourself in the language that feels most natural to you.

Whether you're in Newark, Jersey City, Hoboken, or anywhere in New Jersey, I can see you from the comfort of your home during convenient evening and weekend hours.

My approach to therapy

My approach centers on evidence-based medication management integrated with supportive psychotherapy — because I believe the most effective care addresses both the biological and emotional dimensions of mental health.

I draw from several therapeutic frameworks depending on what works best for you: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills for emotional regulation and distress tolerance, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you live in alignment with your values, Mindfulness-Based Therapy to build present-moment awareness, Interpersonal Therapy to strengthen your relationships and social support, and Motivational Interviewing to help you find clarity and motivation for change.

My prescribing philosophy focuses on evidence-based medications with favorable safety profiles and low potential for dependence. I believe medication should support your wellness, not define it — and I'll explain the reasoning behind any recommendation so you feel informed and empowered in your own care.

Above all, my style is collaborative, warm, and direct. We will work together as a team, and you'll leave each session with a clear understanding of your next steps.

What you can expect from me

My goal for our first session is simple: I want you to feel heard.

We'll start by getting to know each other in a comfortable, confidential setting. I'll gently explore the concerns that brought you to care — what you've been experiencing, how long it's been going on, and what you're hoping to achieve.

We'll also discuss your medical history, any current medications, and your overall health, because I believe mental and physical wellness are deeply connected.

This is also your opportunity to ask me anything — about my approach, about medication, about how telehealth works, or anything else on your mind. There are no wrong questions.

By the end of our first meeting, my hope is that you feel confident we're a good fit to work together and that you leave with a clear, personalized plan — whether that includes therapy strategies, medication, or both. If at any point you feel I'm not the right match, I'm happy to help you find someone who is. Your comfort and trust comes first.
