Great to meet you!

Sixties guru Timothy Leary advised a generation to "Tune in, turn on, drop out." In our current age of social media, mass distraction, and sensory overload, my advice would be to "Tune out, turn off, and drop IN."

Hi. I'm JC Shakespeare, and for the past 18 years I've been helping overwhelmed people tend to their mental and emotional interior spaces. Using mindfulness, breathwork, somatic awareness, and the power of attention, we learn to recognize emotions, regulate them, and clear our minds to make more effective decisions. We TUNE OUT unwelcome thoughts, TURN OFF some of the distractions that steal our attention, and DROP IN to our interior space to recharge and reset our nervous systems.

I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor - Supervisor in the state of Texas, and I have worked in a variety of settings including high school, middle/elementary school, residential treatment, and in private practice since 2009. I have developed a warm, relational style, and in session with me you will never be judged or feel unsupported. You will be in the "driver's seat," as I will never push you into territory that doesn't yet feel safe enough to explore.

I am a father of three lovely young adult daughters, and when I'm not counseling or meditating, you can find me battling on a pickleball court somewhere around Austin! I'm an avid player as well as a certified instructor. In the evening, you may find me enjoying the Live Music Capital of the World!

I encourage you to take the first step toward quieting the chaos and taking control of your life: book a session today!

My approach to therapy

I call my approach to therapy a "guide to the human operating system," and I believe that we must align our intellectual center, our emotional center, and the body in order to function at our highest capacity. Often, learning to get out of our heads and into our bodies gives us an immediate sense of grounding and centeredness that helps us make clear, effective decisions. This approach has been effective in treating depression, anxiety, ADHD, traumatic impact, grief, and substance issues. I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for specific traumatic experiences.

What you can expect from me

In our first session we will examine some pieces of the puzzle like family history, past and current stressors, negative thought patterns, relationship styles, and strengths and challenges. We will choose one or two areas upon which to focus, and get you taking small, manageable steps toward positive change.
