Great to meet you!

My name is J.J. Mull -- I'm a clinical social worker and therapist in private practice. I trained and Smith College School for Social Work and received advanced training in psychoanalytic treatment at Cambridge Health Alliance through Harvard Department of Psychiatry. Since finishing my training, I have worked in a wide range of settings with people struggling with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, substance use disorders, significant trauma, and many other issues. In addition to my clinical work, I am a writer, poet, and researcher and have been a professor in the Masters in Social Work program at Smith College for 4 years.

My approach to therapy

My style in session is warm, direct, and playful. My hope is to create a space that feels exploratory, creative, spontaneous, and enlivening. My primary training is psychoanalytic, meaning (in part) that when I'm listening I'm paying close attention to the ways that past experiences emerge in the present and shape modes of relating and moving in the world. In addition to a psychoanalytic frame, my approach to therapy is deeply trauma-informed and oriented towards developing tools, strategies, and methods to establish an overall sense of aliveness and presence.

What you can expect from me

In a first session we'll get to know one another -- I'll mostly want to get a sense of what you're looking for and how I might be able to help. I might ask some questions about what brought you to therapy and I'll give you a sense of how I work and what you might be able expect from the treatment.
