Great to meet you!

Hi, I’m Jaya R. Luis, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with Full Practice Authority in Illinois and the founder of OHR Health and Wellness.

I believe that mental health care should be individualized, compassionate, and focused on the whole person. My approach is to take the time to understand what you are experiencing, your goals, your history, and the factors that may be affecting your mental health before developing a treatment plan together.

I have experience treating adults with a variety of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, ADHD, insomnia, and other psychiatric conditions. I also have specialized experience in geriatric psychiatry and supporting older adults experiencing cognitive changes and dementia-related behavioral and emotional symptoms.

I earned my Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University and am board certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Before becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I gained more than 16 years of nursing experience across different healthcare settings.

Whether you are seeking help for the first time or looking for a different approach to your current treatment, my goal is to create a supportive environment where you feel heard, respected, and involved in your care. I work collaboratively with my clients to develop treatment plans that are practical, evidence-based, and aligned with their individual needs and goals.

My approach to therapy

My approach to care is compassionate, collaborative, and individualized. I believe effective mental health treatment begins with listening and understanding each person’s unique experiences, concerns, and goals.

I take the time to understand the whole person—not just their symptoms or diagnosis—including their history, current circumstances, medical conditions, medications, and overall well-being. Together, we can develop a treatment plan that feels realistic and appropriate for their individual needs.

When medication is part of treatment, I take a thoughtful and evidence-based approach, carefully considering potential benefits, side effects, interactions, and the individual’s preferences. I believe patients should feel informed and involved in decisions about their care.

My goal is to create a safe and supportive space where clients feel heard, respected, and comfortable being themselves. I recognize that seeking help can be difficult, and I strive to make the process approachable while providing professional, evidence-based psychiatric care.

What you can expect from me

During your first session, we’ll take time to get to know you and understand what brings you to care. We’ll discuss your current concerns, symptoms, mental health history, medical history, medications, and any factors that may be affecting your well-being.

I’ll also ask about your goals for treatment and what you hope to get out of working together. This helps us develop a treatment approach that is tailored to you rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all plan.

If medication may be helpful, we’ll discuss your options, including potential benefits, side effects, and alternatives, so you can make informed decisions about your care. Medication is not automatically prescribed, and any treatment recommendations will be based on your individual needs.

Most importantly, your first session is an opportunity for you to ask questions, share what you’re comfortable sharing, and begin building a therapeutic relationship in a supportive and judgment-free environment.
