Great to meet you!

I’m Dr. Jennifer Self, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with more than 20 years of experience in mental health care, counseling, education, and university leadership. I hold a PhD in Counseling and Family Therapy, MSN, MEd in Counseling, and post-master’s certificate in Family Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing. I work with adolescents and adults age 14 and older experiencing depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, neurodivergence, trauma and PTSD, sleep difficulties, substance use concerns, binge eating, personality disorders, grief, life transitions, identity concerns, and questions of meaning or purpose. I welcome clients of all backgrounds and strive to provide an affirming environment for LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent individuals.

My approach to therapy

My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and individualized. I believe effective care means understanding the whole person—not just symptoms or a diagnosis—including your experiences, relationships, physical health, daily challenges, strengths, and goals. Because I am trained in both psychiatric medication management and counseling, I can integrate these approaches when appropriate, along with lifestyle strategies, evidence-informed supplements, or advanced treatments such as Spravato or TMS. My goal is not simply to reduce symptoms, but to help you feel more like yourself and function better in your everyday life.

What you can expect from me

Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other and understand what brings you to treatment. We’ll discuss your current concerns, relevant personal and medical history, previous treatment experiences, and what you hope to accomplish. I’ll listen carefully, answer your questions, and work with you to develop an initial treatment plan that may include counseling, medication, or other appropriate options. Most importantly, I want you to feel heard, respected, and comfortable being yourself. You don’t need to have everything figured out—we can start where you are and take the next steps together.
