Great to meet you!

I am a Clinical Psychotherapist specializing in treating Mood Disorders, with a special focus on Depression- and Anxiety-related disorders and symptomatology. As a graduate from The University of Notre Dame's Clinical Psychology program, I continue an adherence in my practice to the scientist-practitioner model under which I was trained. As my client, I strive to provide you with evidence-based and empirically supported treatments that have a proven record of efficacy and effectiveness in both laboratory and clinical research settings respectively. Clients receive unique and individualized treatment plans that are personally tailored to meet your specific needs. My theoretical orientation is primarily cognitive-behavioral in nature, and I work with adults, children, adolescents, and families who are suffering with mood/emotional disorders or family dynamic issues. Symptoms associated with these disorders often have significant effects on interpersonal relationships. Therefore, improving relational issues is important for successful outcomes. While specializing in Mood Disorders, I also treat Behavioral and Personality Disorders. Additionally, I see clients suffering with Adjustment- and/or Trauma-related Disorders. I am also a Certified Prepare/Enrich Facilitator and provide premarital and martial counseling through this assessment and counseling program. I look forward to working together!

My approach to therapy

Every single day we make a countless number of choices, and the outcome of each of these choices have some degree of impact upon our life. Past, present, future: All points of time across our personal timelines are created when we choose to "do" or "not do" or any variation of decisive or indecisive activity in between. Some impacts prove to be of significant consequence to us - either immediately or subsequently forthcoming - and others fail to produce an outcome that appears to be of measurable material consequence to us in the long run. Our decisions become ever more important when we consider the level of control that we have (or rather, do not have) on all of the external forces that are constantly acting upon us every day. Given this seemingly overwhelming reality, it is crucial that we choose to actively involve our self in our life. We accomplish this level of control by becoming accountable and responsible for the two things that make us who we are: 1) Our thoughts, and 2) Our actions (otherwise referred to as cognitions and behaviors). Our thoughts are the things that fuel our mind and inform our actions. Therefore, it is necessary to not only understand "what" we are thinking, but more importantly, understand "why" we think it. Recognition of the "what" and "why" of our thoughts is only the beginning of the journey that we will take together. Together, we will engage in a systematic process that will uncover the distressing event(s) that tend to trigger our irrational beliefs, automatic thoughts, and misinformed conclusions. These cognitive distortions directly impact our problematic situational behaviors and physiological responses. Ultimately, these thoughts, moods, and behaviors must undergo fundamental changes. After this process, we are left with rational thoughts that are rooted within a framework of realistic and evidence-based conclusions that allow our past to accurately reflect our present and positively impact our future.

What you can expect from me

At each therapy session, we work together to specify the problems you have encountered during the week or that you expect to encounter in the current week. Then real-life data is collected from you to identify the ideas and behaviors that have interfered with your ability to solve distressing problems/issues on your own. This process gets clients engaged in deciding where to start working. Together, we develop an “action plan” or homework for clients (to do during the week) to implement solutions to problems or to make changes in their thinking (cognitions) and actions (behaviors). Through this process, clients can begin to recognize that the way to get better is to make small changes in how they think and what they do every day. When treatment ends, clients are able to use the very same skills and tools they have learned in therapy as they realize that the skills can be adapted and translated to their day-to-day lives.
