Great to meet you!

Jess believes in some basic truths: childhood experiences shape the way we see the world, the way we relate to others and ourselves. Our families are the strongest early influence of our emotional health and well-being. They hold power to teach us that it’s okay to ask questions, set boundaries and speak truth. However, regardless of what our families taught us, it's not too late to learn these things and find a way to move through the world with more grace, inner strength, and resilience.

Jess was a first-generation college student and holds a Bachelor of Art in Psychology from the University of Oregon Clark Honors College and a Master of Arts in Counseling, Psychology and Human Services with a specialization in Couples and Family Therapy from the University of Oregon, which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and approved by the state of Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Oregon and Washington, and is experienced in working with all ages and relationships, but currently focuses on young and mature adults needing support around life transitions, self-concept, relationship concerns. She is also designated as an American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT) Approved Supervisor.

My approach to therapy

Jess formally began her career more than 23 years ago as a therapist-in-training with a Structural Family Therapy framework. Teaching boundaries and communication, defining values, and modeling compassion and flexibility have yielded the most lasting changes for the individuals she has worked with. Jess believes that the greatest fulfillment and satisfaction in life comes from the alignment of ones actions and words with their core values. This is her definition of integrity and is something that she supports people in finding for themselves. In her work, she continues to emphasize an exploration of effective communication, healthy boundaries in all relationships and the development of Self-leadership. With warmth and humor, ease and challenges, she creates the safe environment clients need to search within, meet themselves, access their strengths, and get unstuck.

What you can expect from me

Jess conducts a full biopsychosocial assessment in the first session. This includes questions about your history, current strengths and pain points needing care. While remaining highly attuned to your pacing and level of readiness, she will present the opportunity for you to learn together about your values, preferences, needs, and the variables that have shaped you to this point. Jess offers initial reflections and her thoughts about a path forward in your therapy with her right from the start. If she lacks the skills, qualifications, or experience to meet your needs, she will communicate openly with you and offer support in finding your ideal fit.
