Great to meet you!

Hi, I'm Jessica, a Licensed Professional Counselor and founder of New Bearings Counseling & Wellness.

I've spent my career working with individuals navigating complex mental health challenges, trauma, substance use, and some of life's most difficult circumstances. One thing that experience has consistently reinforced is that people are so much more than what they've experienced, the decisions they've made, or the challenges they're facing.

I have a master's degree from Central Methodist University and a background in clinical mental health counseling. I'm particularly passionate about supporting veterans, individuals navigating major life transitions, and those who have spent years carrying responsibilities, expectations, or experiences that aren't always easy to put into words.

I believe meaningful change begins with feeling understood, but it also requires honesty, self-reflection, and sometimes the courage to have uncomfortable conversations. My goal is to offer a place where you can do all of that without feeling judged or expected to have everything figured out.

My approach to therapy

I don't believe therapy should feel like sitting across from someone who has all the answers about your life. I believe it should feel like a genuine conversation with someone who is willing to listen, offer perspective, challenge you when needed, and help you better understand yourself.

My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and individualized. I draw from evidence-based practices, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Motivational Interviewing, while recognizing that no single approach works for everyone. I believe therapy should be more than a place to talk about what's going wrong. It should also be an opportunity to understand why certain patterns keep showing up, recognize what's within your control, and begin making meaningful changes.

I value honesty, humor when appropriate, and conversations that go beyond simply getting through the week. Sometimes growth means having uncomfortable conversations, challenging long-held beliefs, or learning to give yourself the same compassion you extend to others. My goal is to help you build insight, develop practical skills, and create meaningful, sustainable changes in your life.

What you can expect from me

Starting therapy can feel uncomfortable, especially when you're not sure where to begin or what to expect. Our first session is simply a chance for us to get to know one another and start understanding what brought you here.

We'll talk about your experiences, current concerns, and what you'd like to work toward. I'll ask questions, explain what the counseling process might look like, and make sure you have room to ask questions of your own. You won't be expected to share everything at once or have the perfect words to explain what you're feeling.

My hope is that you leave our first session feeling heard, a little more comfortable, and confident that we're beginning the process together.
