Great to meet you!

Hi, I’m Joanna Fils-Aime, a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker & therapist based in Washington, D.C. For over 10 years, I’ve supported teens and women from diverse backgrounds, especially those navigating complex trauma, relationship wounds, identity issues, anxiety, depression, and the pressure of showing up while feeling overwhelmed or exhausted.

Therapy with me is a partnership built on honest conversations, practical tools, and steady support as you do the work of healing and growth at your own pace.

My approach to therapy

My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and rooted in real life. I believe therapy works best when it feels like a partnership where you feel understood, supported, and challenged in ways that help you grow.

I draw from evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness. I infuse these with culturally responsive, trauma-informed care, because for many of us, healing cannot ignore how race, culture, faith, and family narratives have shaped our story.

I also integrate strengths-based and relational techniques to help you connect patterns, build healthier coping skills, and create meaningful change.

What you can expect from me

Our first session is about slowing down and getting to know all the many parts of you. Not just your challenges, but your story, your strengths, and what brought you here. I’ll ask questions to understand what’s been feeling heavy, what you hope will be different, and what support looks like for you.

My goal is to create a space that feels calm, genuine, and judgment-free. You can expect a mix of curiosity, compassion, and collaboration as we start identifying goals and exploring what healing might look like for you.

By the end of our first session, most clients say they feel lighter, more understood, and clear on their next steps.
