Great to meet you!

As a counselor with over 20 years of experience, I work with clients to discuss problems, improve self-awareness, grieve, heal, and grow. I have a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision and a background in crisis mental health. I am passionate about addressing the effects of discrimination and injustice in the process of counseling. Currently, I instruct and supervise counselors in training. I specialize in working with older adults and clients with trauma or addiction-related concerns. I have also received advanced training in Gottman-focused couples therapy.

A bit about my approach to therapy

My theoretical approach is primarily humanistic-existential, and I focus on client strenghts, potential for growth, sense of self-worth, sense of identity, and ways of making meaning of experiences. I also integrate Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT), Internal Family Systems theory (IFS), Emotionally-Focused Theory (EFT), Adlerian theory, Gestalt theory, psychodynamic theory, narrative theory, and cognitive-behavioral theory. I specialize in working with older adults, adolescents, adults, and couples. I also use a trauma-focused approach and I have given trainings/lectures on complex trauma, addictions, suicide assessment, and crisis mental health.

What you can expect from our first session

I foster a welcoming, collaborative counseling space. I work with clients to develop short and long-term goals. I regularly check in with clients to make sure that they feel understood and that they are benefiting from counseling. I also discuss my observations of the "here and now" or the counseling process during the session.
