Great to meet you!

Dr. Valdes is a board certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Trained at FIU, he offers initial psychiatric evaluations, medication management (for DEA controlled and non-controlled substances), and psychotherapy when appropriate. Dr. Valdes specializes in ADHD, anxiety, depression, child and adolescent, LGBTQ practice sensitivity, bipolar disorder, and sleep issues. Esteemed for his open, empathetic, and approachable demeanor, he provides a personalized touch and comprehensive approach to mental health, fostering a judgment-free environment where patients feel safe, seen, heard, and supported. As an assistant professor, Dr. Valdes shapes the next generation of healthcare providers while passionately advancing the field and staying at the forefront of the latest treatment innovations. He integrates specialized training from working with VA Veterans with three years of inpatient experience with high-risk children and adolescents, along with a capstone project on LGBTQ practice sensitivity, ensuring compassionate and inclusive care for all.

Recognizing that those struggling with mental health often need an ALLY, Dr. Valdes founded mentALLY Psychiatry in 2022—a practice where patients are not just numbers or statistics, and quality of care is prioritized over a volume-driven model. A space where patients are not passive passengers; instead, they are empowered to be active co-pilots on their mental health journey.

My approach to therapy

Dr. Valdes’s greatest strengths as a provider lie in his ability to create a welcoming and judgment-free environment, fostering strong connections with his patients. His commitment to ongoing education ensures he remains informed about the latest advancements in mental health care, allowing him to deliver evidence-based treatments. He empowers patients to take an active role in their mental health journey, promoting collaboration and personal growth. Additionally, his diverse experiences enable him to understand and address the unique challenges faced by different populations, further enhancing the quality of care he provides. By prioritizing individualized attention, Dr. Valdes ensures that each patient feels valued and supported.

Dr. Valdes employs a variety of treatment methods to provide comprehensive care. He conducts psychiatric evaluations, manages medications, and utilizes tailored evidence-based therapies like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness techniques. Emphasizing psychoeducation, he empowers patients with knowledge about their conditions and collaborates with them to create personalized treatment plans. He also ensures ongoing support through regular follow-ups, fostering effective and compassionate mental health care.

What you can expect from me

During the initial evaluation, patients can expect a review of their presenting symptoms and past history, an objective mental status exam, a diagnosis, and appropriate medication prescriptions or therapy referrals as needed.

Dr. Valdes' patients are eager to improve but often lack the necessary tools to achieve this goal. Many struggle with symptoms of ADHD, anxiety, depression, youth disorders (such as DMDD, ODD, and conduct disorders), bipolar disorder, sleep issues, psychosis or schizophrenia, PTSD, OCD, panic attacks, and intrusive thoughts. Additionally, a significant number identify as members of the LGBTQI+ community.
