Great to meet you!

Hello, I’m Joseph Charles, a dual board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner with more than 30 years of clinical experience. I am also an internationally trained physician and hold a Master of Public Health degree. My broad background helps me understand the close connection between mental health, physical health, family, culture, and community.

I care for adolescents, adults, and older adults experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, trauma-related conditions, schizophrenia, eating disorders, substance-use concerns, and sexual health concerns. My services include comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, supportive psychotherapy, education, and coordination with other healthcare professionals.

My approach to therapy

I believe effective mental healthcare begins with listening carefully, understanding each person’s unique experiences, and treating everyone with dignity and compassion. My approach is warm, holistic, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and solution-oriented.

I consider not only a client’s symptoms, but also their physical health, relationships, family experiences, culture, lifestyle, strengths, and personal goals. I work collaboratively with each client, combining evidence-based medication management, supportive psychotherapy, education, and practical strategies to develop an individualized treatment plan that feels both manageable and meaningful.

What you can expect from me

During your first session, I will provide a calm, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment where you can speak openly about your concerns and what you hope to achieve through treatment. We will review your current symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, medications, previous treatments, daily functioning, relationships, cultural background, strengths, and personal goals.

I will listen carefully, answer your questions, and explain my initial impressions in clear, understandable language. Together, we will discuss appropriate treatment options and develop a personalized plan, which may include medication, supportive psychotherapy, education, lifestyle recommendations, care coordination, and follow-up. My goal is for you to leave the first session feeling heard, understood, and clear about the next steps in your care.
