Great to meet you!

I am a board certified psychiatrist trained in general psychiatry, child psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and addiction medicine. My background spans inpatient and outpatient care, and I bring that range of experience to every session. I combine medication management with talk therapy, because I find the two together lead to better outcomes than either alone. Whether you are working through anxiety, depression, or substance use concerns, I take time to understand your full picture before we decide on a path forward. I see clients in Texas and California via telehealth and in person.

Dr. Joseph Ikekwere is a board-certified psychiatrist whose training spans the full range of care offered at A-I Health. He earned his medical degree from the University of Ibadan College of Medicine and completed his residency in general psychiatry at East Tennessee State University, where he also earned a Master of Public Health. He went on to complete a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago, which he pursued after being selected for a competitive national grant supporting the next generation of addiction psychiatry leaders.

His work has been recognized with several national honors, including an early career research award from the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, the Ruth Fox Scholarship from the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and an endowment award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. His clinical interests include mood disorders, ADHD, anxiety, and the intersection of mental health and chronic medical conditions including infectious disease psychiatry.

My approach to therapy

I approach each session with genuine curiosity about who you are and what you need. I ask questions, listen closely, and try to understand the full context of your life before making any recommendation. Medication and conversation both have a place in good psychiatric care, and I use both.

Patients consistently describe Dr. Ikekwere as attentive, thorough, and genuinely compassionate, a physician who listens carefully and involves patients in every treatment decision. He provides care in English, Yoruba, and Igbo.

What you can expect from me

Our first visit is a chance for me to get to know you and your goals. I will ask about your history, your current concerns, and what you hope to get from care. By the end, we will have a shared sense of where we are starting and what our next steps look like together.
