Great to meet you!

Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and my counseling approach. I hope we’ll have the opportunity to work together in the future.

I’m Dr. Joseph Pangelinan, a professional counselor with over 30 years of experience supporting individuals and couples through life’s complex challenges. I hold a PhD in Counseling from the University of Missouri–St. Louis and have worked across education, nonprofit organizations, and the Missouri Department of Mental Health. My practice spans rural, urban, and suburban communities, serving clients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

I specialize in helping clients navigate career and academic stress, burnout, life transitions, and mental health diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and adjustment disorders. I’ve also worked extensively with first responders and teens facing severe emotional and behavioral challenges. My approach is rooted in deep listening and respect—integrating learning, meaning-making, and skill development to help clients reflect on the past, live fully in the present, and move forward with clarity and purpose.

As an Indigenous Pacific Islander, I bring a culturally grounded perspective to my work. I’m a parent, husband, and spiritual individual who values nature and connection with people from all walks of life. I enjoy spending time with my family and being outdoors—especially near the ocean, trees, and mountains. Our household also includes two cats, a dog, several koi fish, and their frog neighbors.

My work lies at the intersection of culture, education, and mental health, and I’m committed to empowering clients to grow with insight, resilience, and intention.

My approach to therapy

In my work with adults, teens, couples, and families across diverse cultural and social contexts, I hold deep respect for my clients and a strong belief in each person’s capacity for healing and transformation.

I am committed to my clients in the following ways:

Listening deeply to understand each client’s context, concerns, and lived experience.

Supporting and encouraging clients during times of challenge and transition.

Teaching skills that foster resilience, emotional regulation, and personal growth.

Offering honest and helpful feedback to promote insight and self-awareness.

Challenging clients to make the tough choices that lead to meaningful change.

My therapeutic approach is integrative and grounded in:

Identity-Focused Care – Centering culture, roles, and identity—how we see ourselves, are seen by others, and would like to be seen—in the healing process.

Person/Couple-Centered Practice – Honoring the unique needs, strengths, and goals of individuals and couples.

Life-Phasic & Developmental Perspective – Recognizing how life stages and transitions shape emotional and relational well-being, and exploring how work/career, relationships, social transitions, and biology interact to create change.

Problem-Solving & Learning (CBT) – Applying cognitive-behavioral strategies to support adaptive thinking and behavior change.

Solution-Oriented Change – Focusing on practical steps and strengths to help clients move forward, while recognizing that change is not always linear or straightforward.
