Great to meet you!

Hi, I'm Kandace Scott. I focus my practice on working with children and adolescents, and I bring hands-on experience helping young people build coping skills, work through difficult experiences, and reconnect with their strengths.

I earned my Master of Mental Health Counseling from the University of the Southwest and my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University. Since 2022, I have worked as a SOCAT therapist with Mental Health Cooperative, managing a caseload of children, completing intakes, coordinating services with families, and building individualized treatment plans. Before that, I spent several years with Omni Visions and Health Connect America as a team leader, resource coordinator, and in-home counselor, where I trained foster parents, provided case management, and completed specialized training in TF-CBT, play therapy, and sand tray therapy.

When you bring your child to work with me, we'll start by getting to know one another. In our first session, we'll talk about what brought you in and what you hope will be different. From there, we'll build a plan together that fits your child's needs, drawing on play therapy, sand tray work, and trauma-focused approaches when they are helpful.

A quote that guides my work comes from Maya Angelou: "If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be."

My approach to therapy

My approach is warm, collaborative, and centered on meeting each child and family where they are. I believe children communicate best through play, so I lean heavily on play therapy and sand tray work to help them process feelings and experiences they may not yet have words for. When trauma is part of the picture, I bring in TF-CBT to help children and families work through difficult experiences in a structured, supportive way.

I see the whole family as part of the work, not just the child. That comes from years spent coordinating services, training foster parents, and building treatment plans that fit each family's specific needs. I stay hands-on and practical, checking in regularly, adjusting the plan as a child grows, and making sure caregivers feel equipped and included every step of the way.

My goal in every session is to create a space that feels safe and steady, where children can be themselves, and families can trust that we are working toward real, lasting change together.

What you can expect from me

In our first session together, my goal is to help you and your child feel comfortable and at ease. We'll start by getting to know one another. I'll ask about what brought you in, what has been happening at home or school, and what you are hoping will be different. For your child, this often looks like time to explore the playroom or sand tray, so they can start to feel safe before we ever talk about anything hard.

By the end of our first session, we'll have a clearer picture of your family's needs and the beginning of a plan built around them. You can expect a space that feels calm, welcoming, and judgment-free, where your child is free to be themselves, and you are treated as a true partner in the process. From there, we'll keep building together, checking in regularly and adjusting our approach as your child grows and changes.
