Great to meet you!

Karen Vargas, M.Ed., NCC, LPC

Karen Vargas is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master’s degree in Counseling from Sam Houston State University and a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from Texas Tech University. She is also a National Certified Counselor with over 13 years of experience in education and school counseling, working closely with adolescents and families from diverse backgrounds.

Karen believes that every individual has the strength and potential to grow through life’s challenges. She strives to provide a warm, nonjudgmental, and supportive environment where clients feel safe to share their stories and begin their mental health journey. Her approach is collaborative and compassionate- focused on helping clients recognize their inner strengths and build healthy patterns of thinking and behavior.

Drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Therapy, Karen helps clients manage and overcome challenges such as anxiety, depression, stress, past trauma, relationship issues, ADHD, and pre-/postpartum transitions. Her goal is to help each client improve their overall quality of life by developing balance between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Bilingual in English and Spanish, Karen values connection and cultural sensitivity in her work, allowing her to reach and support a broader range of individuals and families.

Outside of counseling, Karen enjoys spending time with her husband of 14 years and their three boys. She loves running, being outdoors, and staying involved in her community. Her years working with at-risk youth and families-including those experiencing homelessness, foster care, and economic hardship- have strengthened her passion for helping others find hope, healing, and resilience.

My approach to therapy

My approach to therapy is compassionate, collaborative, and strengths-based. I believe that every person has the ability to grow and heal when given a safe, supportive space to explore their thoughts and emotions. I strive to create an environment where clients feel understood, valued, and empowered to make positive changes in their lives.

I primarily draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Therapy, which means we’ll work together to identify patterns of thinking, feelings, and behaviors that may be holding you back and develop practical strategies to promote balance and well-being. I also incorporate mindfulness and self-compassion techniques to help clients stay grounded and resilient through life’s challenges.

My goal is to meet each client where they are and provide tools that fit their unique needs- whether that’s learning to manage anxiety, process past trauma, navigate relationships, or find confidence in new life stages.

Above all, I believe therapy is a partnership. You are the expert of your own story, and I am here to walk alongside you as you work toward healing, growth, and a greater sense of peace.

What you can expect from me

During our first session, my goal is to help you feel comfortable and heard. We’ll spend time getting to know each other and discussing what brought you to therapy, what you’d like to work on, and what you hope to gain from our time together. I’ll ask some questions to learn more about your background, current challenges, and any goals you may have, but you are always in control of what you choose to share.

This first session is also a chance for you to get a feel for my style and to see if it feels like a good fit. Together, we’ll begin identifying your strengths and setting small, achievable goals that align with your needs.

I believe therapy should feel like a safe, judgment-free space where you can be yourself. My priority is to create that environment from day one- so you leave feeling supported, understood, and hopeful about your next steps.
