Great to meet you!

Hello, my name is Katie. I am a mental health counselor. I have five years of experience as a licensed mental health counselor with eight years of experience in the mental health field. I received my Masters degree in counselors education through Indiana University upon obtaining my Bachelors degree through Purdue University. In my career I have held positions in a variety of settings including home-based, residential, prison, and private practice. Working in a variety of settings has allowed me to find the population that I am most passionate about which would be adolescents and their families. As a counselor I work with clients who struggle with depression, anxiety, behavioral concerns, post-traumatic stress disorder, and communication issues.

My approach to therapy

In counseling sessions, I utilize a client-centered approach, allowing treatment to be individualized to each persons needs. I have clients use a bottom-up approach focusing on moving physical sensations of their emotions through their body and then engage clients in cognitive processing. Clients will also utilize their strengths amd interests as coping skills to improve their functioning, I teach clients techniques from Cognitive-behavioral, Dialectical-behavioral, systemic approaches, and somatic practices to build a toolbox of coping skills for the client.

What you can expect from me

Clients can expect the counseling relationship to be collaborative, we will create a treatment plan based on the client's strengths and interests, as well as my professional suggestions. The sessions will be semi-structured as I use open-ended questions to explore concerns and engage in active listening. I also provide psychoeducation on diagnoses and interventions for the client to utilize on their own, outside of session. These interventions are taught and practiced in each session and assigned as homework to practice outside of the session. These homework assignments are reviewed in the following session to identify their benefits and challenges.
