Great to meet you!

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, life can get stressful and overwhelming. After all, being human is hard! During these situations requiring additional support, I believe it is necessary to pay close attention to the stories we tell ourselves. Sometimes, we are in too much emotional pain and we feel too stuck to reframe our perceptions or to find the solutions to our problems. Once that emotional pain is relieved, we can undergo a healing process that leaves us feeling empowered, revitalized, and excited about living life. I believe therapy is a space for us to work together to find this sense of well-being.

My name is Kathlynn Gates and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of California (LCSW #138060) and Indiana (LCSW #34013217A). I earned my Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California in 2023, with an emphasis on adult mental health and wellness. I also earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Throughout my career, I have gained experience working with individuals who struggle with issues stemming from substance abuse, LGBTQIA+ issues, personality disorders, and coping with depression and anxiety. In my practice, I utilize current evidence-based interventions and research to help clients experience healing that involves engaging both the mind and the body.

My approach to therapy

Rather than focusing on symptoms alone, I apply a comprehensive approach that considers how the complexity of an individual’s behavior is uniquely affected by their social, cultural, and biological environments. My goal is to create a safe space for learning how to navigate life’s challenges with resilience. This begins by building a therapeutic relationship of mutual respect, trust, and collaboration. My practice is guided by intention and respect for individualized goals and needs; therefore, building a solid foundation is integral in helping clients become the healthiest version of themselves. Working together, let’s uncover the intricacies of your mind’s inner-workings to find solutions, tear down the barriers that have come between you and your goals, and get you functioning at your best!

What you can expect from me

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and begin building a comfortable, collaborative therapeutic relationship. We'll discuss what brought you to therapy, explore your current concerns, review relevant background information, and identify your goals for treatment. I'll also answer any questions you have about the therapy process so that you leave with a clear understanding of what to expect moving forward. There is no pressure to share everything at once: we'll work at a pace that feels comfortable for you!
