Great to meet you!

Hello, I am Kenlo McGowan, a Pennsylvania licensed professional counselor holding a Master of Arts in Community Counseling, now known as Clinical Mental Health. I have been working in the behavioral health field in a variety of capacities since the 1980's and in counseling roles since 1996 with an Employee Assistance Program and a hospital-based addictions treatment program. I received my license in 2016 and have been providing therapy since that time to those facing issues with which they need assistance. Addictions treatment is one of my specialty areas and I hold a Master Addictions Counselor certification. However, I have much experience in counseling those with anxiety issues, grief, depression, compulsive behaviors, as well as PTSD, chronic illness, the changes of aging and many more.

My approach to therapy

My counseling approach is based upon acceptance, honesty, and providing a comfortable atmosphere for individuals to release and discuss the issues they are struggling with, while getting support, guidance and encouragement. I work from the frameworks of Solution Focused therapy and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy but am well-versed and experienced with many evidence-based practices as well and strive to accommodate each client with what best assists them.

What you can expect from me

When a client begins therapy, initial sessions will be spent in talking about incidents or problems that have brought them to seek therapy and some background information or key points that will help me begin to map a course of treatment with them. Sensitive issues are addressed to the client's ability and desire to disclose information, building trust at the pace the client can tolerate, reminding them they are being heard and the information accepted without judgment.
