Great to meet you!

Kenneth Mbuen, PMHNP-BC, is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner joining Headway with a commitment to expanding access to high-quality mental health care across Virginia. Kenneth began his academic journey by earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University and later obtained a Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Walden University in Minneapolis.

Driven by a strong desire for lifelong learning and professional growth, Kenneth’s clinical experience extends well beyond the classroom. He has served in a variety of roles throughout his career, including Psychiatric Registered Nurse at Dominion Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia, and as a PMHNP-BC at Bloom Health Centers and Aevum Behavioral. With over 15 years of experience in the mental health field, Kenneth brings a depth of knowledge and a compassionate, patient-centered approach to care. Kenneth has also work extensively with Nursing home patients receiving rehabilitation to those having dementia

Kenneth is currently pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree at Walden University, with an anticipated graduation date of May 2026. His clinical interests include working with individuals experiencing anxiety disorders, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sleep disorders and insomnia, and mood disorders.

Outside of clinical practice, Kenneth prioritizes self-care and balance. He enjoys reading, listening to calming music, traveling, and playing soccer—activities that help him recharge and remain fully present for the individuals and communities he serves.

My approach to therapy

My approach to providing care is collaborative, patient-centered, and grounded in evidence-based practice. I believe that effective mental health treatment begins with building a strong therapeutic relationship where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered to take an active role in their care. I strive to create a calm, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment in which clients can openly discuss their concerns and goals.

I work closely with clients to develop individualized treatment plans that reflect their unique experiences, values, and preferences. Care is never one-size-fits-all. I focus on understanding the whole person—including mental health symptoms, medical history, lifestyle factors, stressors, and strengths—so that treatment is both comprehensive and realistic. Education is an important part of my style; I take time to explain diagnoses, treatment options, and medications in clear, understandable terms so clients can make informed decisions.

My clinical approach is trauma-informed and emphasizes safety, trust, and collaboration. When medication management is appropriate, I use a thoughtful, conservative, and evidence-based approach, regularly monitoring effectiveness and side effects while making adjustments as needed. I also value coordination of care and often collaborate with therapists, primary care providers, and other members of the care team to support continuity and long-term success.

My areas of focus include working with individuals experiencing anxiety disorders, depression, ADHD, OCD, sleep disorders/insomnia, and mood disorders. I am especially attentive to helping clients improve daily functioning, emotional regulation, and overall quality of life. My goal is to support clients in achieving symptom relief, developing coping strategies, and building resilience—while fostering a sense of autonomy, confidence, and hope throughout their treatment journey.

What you can expect from me

Clients can expect their first session with me to be welcoming, supportive, and collaborative. I strive to create a calm, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel safe, heard, and comfortable sharing their experiences at their own pace. Building trust is a priority, and I want clients to feel confident that their concerns are taken seriously.

During the initial visit, we complete a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation that includes a discussion of current symptoms, mental health and medical history, medications, lifestyle factors, stressors, and personal strengths. I encourage open dialogue and questions throughout the session so care feels transparent and collaborative rather than rushed or directive.

Together, we identify clear, realistic goals tailored to the client’s needs. These may include reducing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, mood instability, inattention, or sleep difficulties; improving daily functioning and emotional regulation; and enhancing overall quality of life. When appropriate, we discuss treatment options such as medication management, psychoeducation, and coordination with therapy or other supportive services. Any recommendations are explained clearly so clients can make informed decisions about their care.

My approach is trauma-informed and patient-centered, with an emphasis on respect, autonomy, and collaboration. The goal of the first session is not to “fix everything” immediately, but to establish a strong therapeutic partnership, develop an initial plan of care, and outline next steps. By the end of the visit, clients can expect to feel understood, supported, and reassured that they are working with a provider who is committed to their long-term mental health and well-being.
