Great to meet you!

Komekia Peterson, LMHC, CASAC-M, NCC, ACS, is a licensed mental health counselor, clinical supervisor, and doctoral candidate in Counselor Education at the University of Rochester with over a decade of experience providing trauma-informed, wellness-focused care to individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. She has served in both leadership and direct service roles, including as Program Director within the Behavioral Health Department and as a psychotherapist treating clients with co-occurring disorders. Komekia is also a nationally certified health and wellness coach, mindfulness instructor, and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practitioner, combining evidence-based and holistic strategies to support healing and sustainable growth. She currently teaches and supervises counselors-in-training in CASAC and CACREP-accredited programs, maintaining a strong commitment to equitable, person-centered care in both academic and clinical settings.

My approach to therapy

Her clinical approach is rooted in Psychodynamic and Humanistic traditions, integrating both psychoanalytic insight and emotion-focused techniques. She draws from a range of evidence-based modalities, including defense mechanism work, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mindfulness practices. She has extensive experience working with adolescents, adults of all ages, and families navigating complex diagnoses, including PTSD and anxiety-related conditions.

What you can expect from me

Clients can expect to leave sessions with greater self-awareness, practical coping tools, and a deeper understanding of how their emotions, behaviors, and past experiences are connected. My goal is to create a compassionate, nonjudgmental space where clients feel seen, heard, and emotionally safe. I strive to meet each person where they are, fostering a supportive environment that empowers meaningful growth, emotional resilience, and lasting change.
