Great to meet you!

I’m Lakesha Barrett, a Licensed Therapist with over 20 years of experience supporting individuals and families through life’s most challenging transitions. I studied social work at VCU and obtained my master's degree in 2005. I obtained my licensure in 2011, after years of hands-on work in community-based, group home, and outpatient counseling settings.

My approach to therapy

My background has allowed me to develop a grounded, compassionate, and practical approach to therapy. I have extensive experience working with individuals affected by trauma, intergenerational experiences, and work-related stress and I approach this work through a trauma-informed, strengths-based lens. I also support those struggling with self-esteem, emotional regulation, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal challenges. We won’t just talk about the problems; we will develop actionable, evidence-based strategies-such as symptom management techniques, interpersonal skill-building, and self-esteem reconstruction-to help you reconnect with your inner strength. My approach is rooted in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Empowerment Therapy, and Strengths-Based Approach.

What you can expect from me

Clients often describe me as warm, grounded, and easy to talk to. I strive to create a therapeutic environment rooted in trust, respect, and authenticity. Whether you are navigating trauma, relationship challenges, or personal growth, you do not have to do it alone. In our first session, my main goal is to get to know you, not just what brings you in, but who you are as a whole person. I’ll ask some questions to understand your history, what you’ve been navigating, and what you’re hoping for. We’ll go at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you. Once we agree to work together I’ll be there to listen to you, challenge you, and support you along the way.
