Great to meet you!

I’m Laura Heidler, LPC/MHSP (TN) and LCMHC (UT). I chose this field because I’ve always been drawn to the moments when someone is ready to share their story—when connection, trust, and understanding can make a real difference. I want therapy to feel safe, collaborative, and genuinely helpful, whether you’re looking for support through something specific or working on long-term change.

In session, I use a skills-based, compassionate approach grounded in CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), Behavior management Therapy, and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). That means we’ll work on the patterns that keep anxiety and depression going—while also building tools to handle difficult emotions and move toward what matters to you.

I work with individuals across a range of needs, including:

  • Anxiety, Depression, Stress-Management, Neurodivergent experiences, including autism, and
  • other general mental health concerns where coping, emotional regulation, and understanding yourself better can help.

My education includes an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (Valparaiso University, 2012), and my background spans both direct counseling and clinical leadership. Over 17+ years in the field, I’ve worked in roles that strengthened my clinical foundation as well as my commitment to ethics, quality care, and ongoing development—supporting clients and also coaching and supervising clinicians along the way.

If you’re looking for a counselor who feels steady, empathetic, and practical—someone who will listen closely and help you create meaningful change—I'm glad you’re here. 🤍

My approach to therapy

In therapy with me, we use a collaborative, structured approach grounded in CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). My goal is to help you feel supported while building practical skills you can use in everyday life.

Here’s what that often looks like:

  • CBT helps you understand the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We’ll work together to notice patterns in your thinking, identify what keeps things stuck, and practice more helpful ways of responding to stress, anxiety, and low mood.
  • ACT helps you make space for difficult emotions and take meaningful action. We’ll explore what’s within your control, learn acceptance skills for uncomfortable feelings, and strengthen your ability to move toward values-based goals (especially when it’s not easy).
  • We connect your progress to your goals. You’ll have a say in what we focus on, and we’ll identify areas you want to work on so therapy stays relevant to your life.
  • Skills are part of the work. We practice tools for coping, emotional regulation, and building momentum between sessions.

If you’re looking for therapy that blends practical strategies with a compassionate, nonjudgmental approach, you’ll find that here. 🤍

What you can expect from me

In our first session, the focus is on getting to know you and understanding what’s been bringing you to therapy. We’ll talk about what you’ve been experiencing, what feels most difficult right now, and what you’re hoping will be different.

Together, we’ll:

  • Explore your goals for therapy and what “progress” would look like for you
  • Listen to your story at your pace and learn what’s been happening in your life and relationships
  • Identify patterns and concerns you’d like to work on (for example, anxiety, depression, stress, motivation, coping, or emotional regulation)
  • Clarify next steps, including what topics we may focus on and how we’ll move forward in future sessions
  • Set a comfortable tone, so you feel supported, respected, and in control of the pace of the work

If you have questions about the process, you can bring them anytime. Our first session is about building trust and finding a direction that fits you. 🤍
