Laura Munoz-Torres

My current credentials are as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Professional Art Therapist (LPAT), Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC), and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). As an immigrant myself, I understand the multi-level variables that take place when adapting to a new culture. Besides, speaking English I am fluent in Spanish and I enjoy working with my Spanish-speaking community. Throughout my years in the mental health field, I have worked with children of diverse ages providing social skills and I have over seven years of experience working for adults in the ID/DD population in both, community and residential settings.

I believe in the strength of the therapeutic alliance and the power of mindfulness. Some of my favorite therapeutic strategies focus on art therapy, visualizations, grounding exercises, and many other CBT techniques. The theoretical framework I utilize is multi-family, psychoeducational, and evidence-based; incorporating family dynamics and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs to assess the immediate needs of the client. Furthermore, I have done extensive course work on the treatment of trauma and crisis intervention, and I am certified in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).

It is my philosophy that a trusting therapeutic alliance be established first before healing work can be done. I like to meet my client where they are at and like to design each session around their needs. A collaboration to build the roadmap is necessary.
