Great to meet you!

My name is Laurence Smith and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. My career began in 1990 as a group home counselor for adolescents in foster care. My outlook has been shaped by the dedication of colleagues I have met in many settings and roles, and by the courageous clients I have been honored to work with. Now, I provide individual therapy to adults experiencing anxiety, depression, stressful life transitions, and other issues. I am also an ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Provider.

My approach to therapy

Virtually all of us can benefit from this simple advice: "quiet the mind and open the heart." Unfortunately, our stressful environments are pressuring us to do the opposite. But, through targeted tools and practices, we can: observe our thinking and emotions more objectively, accept what we cannot control, develop more compassion for ourselves and others, refuse to be defined by the worst things that happened to us, and take action toward our true values and purpose.

What you can expect from me

In the process of our work together, I strive to help clients understand their most vital emotional / psychological needs, and identify which ones are not being met. Ideally, they envision how to better address their unmet needs - by changing the conditions around them, or undertaking new behaviors, or developing more empowering attitudes about their current conditions, or their untapped opportunities in the future. Together, we develop an individualized plan that guides the process of change.
