Great to meet you!

I’m Makala Smith, a board certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). I am committed to providing holistic mental health care through a balanced and patient-centered approach.

My background includes neurology, trauma, and public health nursing. I earned my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree from University of Colorado after I realized the need for psychiatric providers in my rural community of Meeker, Colorado and surrounding areas. By furthering my education, I am able to provide specialized, thoughtful, empathetic psychiatric care.

My approach to therapy

My approach to care is compassionate, collaborative, and individualized. I believe that every person’s experiences, challenges, and goals are unique, and I work closely with clients to develop treatment plans that fit their specific needs. I strive to create a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered to take an active role in their mental health journey.

I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, life transitions, stress, and other mental health concerns. My approach combines evidence-based medication management with education, supportive counseling, and practical lifestyle strategies to help clients improve their overall well-being. I value treating the whole person and recognize the important role that sleep, nutrition, exercise, relationships, and self-care play in mental health. My goal is to help clients build resilience, gain insight, and develop the tools they need to achieve lasting improvement and a better quality of life.

What you can expect from me

During our first session, clients can expect a welcoming, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where they can openly discuss their concerns, goals, and experiences. I take time to get to know each client as a whole person, including their symptoms, medical and mental health history, lifestyle factors, strengths, and the challenges that have brought them to treatment. My goal is to ensure clients feel heard, understood, and comfortable asking questions throughout the process.

Together, we will identify treatment goals and develop a personalized plan to help improve symptoms and overall well-being. This may include discussing medication options, lifestyle factors, coping strategies, and other tools that can support mental health. By the end of the first appointment, clients can expect to have a clearer understanding of their treatment options, a collaborative plan moving forward, and a sense of partnership in their care.
