Great to meet you!

Hi, my name is Mara-Joanne Derinor. I have extensive education and experience in nursing, and during my studies, I spent time abroad in Haiti to understand nursing in a different cultural setting. Since then, I've gotten my master’s degree in Psychiatric Mental Health, and later on got my Doctorate in nursing.

I specialize in supporting clients struggling with anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, binge eating disorder, psychotic disorders, autism, and ADHD just to name a few.

My approach to therapy

I utilize many approaches when providing mental healthcare. Theories that I base my practice on are behaviorism, biological, cognitive, humanistic, and positive psychology. Evidence-based practice is the leading key component of my practice. Therapies that I incorporate into my practice are cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, interpersonal therapy, motivational interviewing, and supportive psychotherapy just to name a few.

The tone/environment that I create for my sessions is a relaxing and therapeutic tone/environment. I speak in a low and calming voice. Many patients describe my voice as relaxing. I strive to create the feeling of an oasis during each session.

What you can expect from me

During our first session I will take the time to conduct a thorough assessment and learn all about you. The first session typically lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. I will ask about your psychiatric history, hospitalization history, medical history, family history, and social history just to name a few. The first session is tailored to learning all about you and your desires/needs. We will go over any diagnoses and create a treatment plan that is specifically tailored to your interests, needs, and desires.

Goal setting with patients is always patient centered. I want you to always feel seen and heard. I will not make any decisions without your approval or acknowledgement. I provide thorough education when you and I are making clinical decisions.
